  • Pourriez-vous m’aider ? — Could you help me?
  • Auriez-vous l’heure ? — Would you have the time?

B. Hypothesis — Si-clauses

The conditional is used in the main clause of a hypothetical sentence with si + imperfect:

Si-clause (condition)Main clause (result)
Si + imparfaitconditionnel présent
Si j’avais de l’argent,j’achèterais une maison.
Si tu venais,nous serions contents.

For past hypotheses (things that didn’t happen):

Si-clauseMain clause
Si + plus-que-parfaitconditionnel passé
Si j’avais travaillé,j’aurais réussi.
S’il avait plu,nous serions restés.

C. Reported Speech (Future in the past)

When reporting what someone said, the future becomes the conditional:

  • Direct: Il dit : “Je viendrai.”
  • Indirect: Il a dit qu’il viendrait. — He said he would come.

D. Uncertainty / Unverified information

Used in journalism to indicate unconfirmed information:

  • Le président serait à Paris. — The president is reportedly in Paris.
  • Il y aurait eu un accident. — There is said to have been an accident.

E. Regret / Reproach (conditionnel passé)

  • Tu aurais pu me prévenir ! — You could have warned me!
